Program Note
Water balloons of different colors and shapes drop rapidly from the sky. As they hit the ground, the balloons burst and water splashes everywhere. “Splash!!” begins from a musical scene (section A), which reminds of such a children’s water balloon play. Albeit modern as to sound and harmony, the rhythmic characteristic would lead a mostly pleasant atmosphere. Following section (B) illustrates a dancing fountain – still energetic but slightly more elegant. In the middle, there is a peaceful and shimmering moment (section C) comprised of scattered gestures. Having loosely rondo form of ABA′CB′A″, this piece also has abundant structural twists that would let listeners’ predictions take a surprising turn, just to add more fun.
The original version of “Splash!!” was premiered on 9/19/2009 at Seoul Art Center, Seoul, by Isang Yun Festival Orchestra with conductor Chi-Yong Jung as part of the final round of Isang Yun International Music Prize 2009 and won Special Prize. It is revised in 2012 for the performance by Minnesota Orchestra.
