Cecilia Kang, clarinet & Angela Park, piano

The Korean concepts of han and heung are simple, yet profoundly deep. Emotional counterparts to one another, they coexist to encapsulate the complexity of the human experience. Han represents sorrow, grief, individual pain and collective trauma, while heung signifies joy, vitality, and radiance. On THE HAN(한/恨) AND HEUNG(흥/興) ODYSSEY: GLOBAL SOUNDS OF RESILIENCE & JOY, clarinetist Cecilia Kang embarks on a sonic ritual to explore these concepts and their deeply-rooted place within humanity.
The collection of works for clarinet, voice, piano, and electronics brings together nine contemporary composers from diverse cultural and musical backgrounds. Each piece encapsulates elements of han and heung focused through prisms of different social perspectives, and the music transforms the oppositional forces into a universal emotional language.
