Program Notes
In the bar district next to the coast,
the nightlife is in full swing.
After a long day at work, we enjoy the concert full
of clinking glasses, of drumming bowls with chopsticks,
of cheerful laughter and chatter, and, of course, of soulful songs.
Night sea is waving arms along the beat.
Twinkling are city lights over night fog.
Ringing are ship horn sounds from afar.
This is the image that “Zzan!!” (Cheers, Surprise, or Sad in Korean) depicts.
In this piece, I use various drinking glasses with other tableware as percussion instruments, among which is also the tambourine, an instrument that you can find in every single room at a Noraebang (Korean-style Karaoke room) in South Korea.
The beginning should also remind you of wind waves and sea breezes. Melodies you can hear have certain elements of Trot, a Korean popular music genre. A soul music for Korean that has been comforting the general public for more than a century, Trot exhibits features of Japanese Enka, Korean folk music, and various Western music.
Zzan!! was commissioned by Busan Philharmonic Orchestra as a part of my residency as its Artist-of-the-Year. Reflecting the multicultural nature of modern Busan and South Korea in general by combining Trot and Classical music, I hope this piece also comforts the audience elsewhere – just like a drink does!
